Baked by the Sun
On Earth Day 2017 we pledged to build a solar array on the roof of our bakery. On Earth Day 2018 we are thrilled to announce that our 196KW array is operational, capturing energy from the sun to help bake our organic breads.
This project reflects the values that have sustained Bread Alone since 1983. Deep commitment to people and planet, through our support of organic agriculture and our daily actions running the business. But it also marks a new commitment for the future, dedicating more energy than ever before to sustaining both our communities and our natural resources.
Because the need is there, and it is acute. Right here at home in NY, winter temperatures are 4.5 degrees higher than just 50 years ago. Very heavy precipitation events are up 70%. Sea level in NY Harbor is likely to increase by 2.5 feet by 2050, and 6 feet by 2100.
Through our decisions every day -- choosing the things to support and not support -- and long-term commitments -- investing in the resources to sustain our future -- we can and will tackle the ecologic challenge that faces us, right here at home and around the world.
Thanks to each and every one of you that supports and business and allows us to do our work. We are more motivated than ever before to do well with our daily actions, and we strive to inspire others to do the same.
