FAQs

  • Our three cafes are open everyday from 7am-5pm to serve our communities, with the following exceptions. We are closed both Thanksgiving and Christmas, and close early at 4pm on Christmas Eve, Easter and New Year’s Eve (except for Woodstock on Christmas Eve that stays open late until 7pm for the town parade!).

  • Please visit our “Find Us” page to see where you can locate our products near you.

  • We source our USDA Certified Organic flour from Northeast and Quebecoise mills that buy grain from regional farmers in North America. You can read about two of the incredible mills we work with, La Milanaise and Farmer Ground Flour, on our blog.

  • All of our sliced breads baked at our organic production facility in Kingston, NY and sold through grocery stores are Certified Organic, and all of our breads baked at our fossil fuel free Boiceville bakery are made with organic wheat. You can find out more about each product’s certifications by visiting our products page.

  • Our organic production facility in Kingston, NY is Certified Climate Neutral, which means we measure our carbon footprint, work each year to reduce it through initiatives like increasing our solar power and electrification, and offset the rest of our footprint each year.

  • Our Boiceville bakery and cafe is 100% fossil fuel free – meaning it is fully electrified and powered by renewable energy through the property’s nearly 400 kW solar array. Fossil fuels–like propane, gasoline, and natural gas–are buried deep in the ground until we extract them and the carbon contained in them would remain buried unless we extract and burn them to produce power, which pollutes our environment with CO2, a key contributor to climate change. In addition to renewable solar power, we use wood in Boiceville for our wood-fired ovens. All wood is part of a natural carbon cycle. The little bit of carbon in trees will be released when they decompose or are burned. The wood that we use comes from lumber yard scraps–no trees are taken down for purposes of baking bread!

  • Yes! Since 2018, we have been proud members of 1% for the Planet, donating 1% of our revenue to environmental non-profits annually.

  • Sourdough bread is made using starter culture, which is a mixture of flour, water and naturally occurring beneficial bacteria and wild yeasts that has been allowed to ferment. This gives the bread a unique flavor and texture, enhancing the strength of the bread. When we say 100% sourdough, it means that we use no other leavener (such as yeast) in the dough. It’s one of the reasons people say that they feel better when they eat our bread.

  • Here at Bread Alone, we believe that renewable energy paired with electrification are key levers for fighting climate change, the greatest challenge we face today. We help power our bakeries in Boiceville and Kingston with nearly 600 kW of solar power–hence, baked by the sun. In Kingston, we have nearly 200kW of solar power that powers a portion of our energy needs. In Boiceville we have electrified all of our appliances and installed nearly 400 kW of solar power on site. This work supports our commitment to source 100% of our energy from renewable resources by 2030.

  • It depends how quickly you eat it!

If you go through a loaf fast, feel free to store in a cool dry location like a bread box until the date on the bag enclosure.

If you won’t finish the bread before the best buy date on the bag enclosure, you can also refrigerate our breads to extend the breads life—refrigeration may dry out the product a bit, but we think it is still delicious! You can always refresh a slice in the toaster.

If you are slower to finish a loaf, we recommend freezing the bread and thawing or toasting a piece at a time as you see fit.

Most store-bought breads are packed with additives, like mold inhibitors, that require sugar to mask their unpalatable taste. They may last longer, but we believe honest, nourishing, and delicious foods are perishable. That’s what the freezer is for!

  • The majority of our breads are vegan, with the notable exception of several varieties that traditionally include egg and dairy products such as our Cinnamon Twist and Brioche. Additionally, our Whole Grain Health and Ancient Grain loaves both contain honey for those who avoid honey as part of their dietary restrictions. You can find all of the ingredients in our breads and pastries on our product pages.

  • All of our breads contain wheat, which is an allergen. However, our sliced breads that you can purchase at the grocery store are made in our Kingston facility where the only allergens processed in the facility include: wheat, eggs and soy.

  • All of our products are made in facilities that process wheat, however we have two pastries that do not include wheat flour in their recipes: our flourless chocolate tart, and our geneva cake.

  • Our plastic bags are recyclable via store drop-off (the majority of curbside recycling programs in the US do not collect plastic films). Additionally, our compostable bags – which currently have limited distribution – are compostable through commercial programs. You can learn more here.

  • We do not at this time! We try to make our bread widely available at grocery stores because bread is bulky and perishable so we don’t think it is the best fit for direct shipment.
